Please no, there are plenty of reading material at that level, I do like a novel to stretch me. Now and then.

I used to write for a website related to mesothelioma lawsuits, and would constantly get the feedback that the reading level was too high. My response was always, "You try writing a page about multidistrict litigation on sarcomatoid peritoneal mesothelioma and see what grade level it ends up being."

I love reading difficult books! That said, it is really appreciated when non standard words or obscure historical references come with context clues for meaning (words) or a footnote (history. refs) on the first use. I have a dictionary and Wikipedia but I'd like to only get them out once or twice a chapter.

Comprehensible works are definitely nice, but there comes a certain limitation to style when you restrict yourself that is kind of antithetical to an author’s work, especially when it comes to fiction

I think being mindful of vocabulary and using it to be accessible is a good idea. But that doesn't mean your prose has to suffer! Tolkien used simple words to evoke powerful images and emotions. A good writer doesn't need to feel limited by vocabulary.

Novels don’t have to be written for lower levels of readers. However, what irks me terribly is the elitism of some readers when a novel that is written to be more accessible subsequently becomes popular. There’s a difference between writing to challenge and writing to sell.

I think I agree as long as we're talking about reading as a hobby. I think works about scientific discoveries (intended to inform/educate people about the latest jumps in science, as in "we're here now, as a people") or, as you said, news need to be simplified and accessible. Knowledge in general shouldn't be gatekept. But I also understand the frustration of a book overexplaining stuff to you. I stopped reading many a novel for that reason.

I wish accessible language would be properly marketed. Like, this is an incredible thing for people with learning disabilities, people who are still learning a language, etc. who still want to read about an adult topic. This could be a selling point but instead so many publishers lump books together that are meant for very different audiences. (I also want more books that use simple language without being overly obvious in their themes as a lower reading level would imply.)
I'm a big fan of very complicated, wordy books and those need to be able to exist alongside easier books without trying to lump them together because it would be somehow shameful to admit that a book is for a different audience.

Write to your audience. If your audience is the general population, write at a basic level. If your audience is a dedicated reader, write at a higher level

EVERYTHING should not be written at a lower reading level, because you should be gaining intelligence and gaining the ability to read at higher levels throughout your life.

at the same time as agreeing with you, I'm a serious advocate AGAINST our shared major's tendency to simply bring about elitism and crashing out to 5 year old level every other century. same thing happens with classical music circles. like one of my most hated people is T. S. Elliot because of his sheer pretentiousness of prose and his very on the nose ideas of "only i know how to fix everythint all of you are filthy and wrong". im pretty sure i have shit talked the Wasteland at least in 3 different courses even though im also a language nerd. if a text's entire pitch is "here is what is wrong and how to fix it" it shouldnt be written with the "but you illiterate peasants shouldn't be able to ubderstand it" imo.

I feel like things that ARE supposed to be read by all people should be more comprehensible, like books with straight up facts, science, school books, history books, they should be simple and not overly explained, books tho who, like you said are for pleasure can be any kind, cause you read what you like :)

What’s your opinion around the discourse of YA (and NA romance) dystopias? Usually The Hunger Games is the standard and often the comps to these books and it had something to say. I see people say that these new books don’t have much of anything to say so it’s not technically real dystopia. That it’s not supposed to be turn your brain off literature.
