the irony of brennan saying that when he had 2 pcs die rather unceremoniously in the FIRST combat of d20 as a whole and had to improvise an excuse to resurrect them is so funny to me (he's still right ofc)

The only time I've ever thrown a seemingly unwinnable fight at my players is when a player needed to bow out of the running and we retired their PC by having them kidnapped by backstory bad guys during a time crunch quest so the party had to move on without them. even then it was close. I had 2 downed PCs, 1 dead and the cleric on 2 failed death saves before they surrendered. It was glorious and emotional.

See i plan a balanced encounter and then only 1/4 of the party stand and fight so those players keep dying and my other players survive it all

nah bro my DM gives us combat that is challenging and if we are dumb we just die. he always makes sure it's possible if we play right but we had one guy that just ran into 3 enemies because "Yeah my AC is 19 I can surely survive this" he got wrecked in two turns and the DM told him 3 times before, these are really strong enemies are you sure?

reminds me of a trrpg one shot thing I played where basically every player died and afterwards the DM told us the guide basically said to kill everyone if possible 😅 (but obviously noone was invested in a character or anything so it was fine)

the most devastating way I've died was at the end of the campaign, we're all in the King's office, he's like i name you knight/give you lands/anything that was the end goal of our PC and then he nodded to his guards and they shot the five of us dead. The king wanted someone to do the dirty work and we knew too much. The way the DM narrated it... we cried our eyes out

As a dm you should be giving a fair warning to your players if youre going to allow them to get into situations where they are fighting out of their combat rating and remind them that running away and surviving is a valid way to beat encounters that are clearly not meant for their level and are setting up something for them to come back to when theyre stronger
