@oxfordmathematics: You're a 13 year old girl sitting in a maths class thinking 'what has this got to say about my life?' You get home and say the same to your family who get a bit twitchy because they think a bit of maths might be useful. Part 2 of our chat with students Ellie Guha and Sienna Jacobs from our Mirzakhani Society, named after Iranian Mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani, the first female mathematician to win a Fields Medal. #stem #maths #math #mathtok #sciencetok #student #students @University of Oxford
I hate how masculine stem is stereotypically portrayed

I always loved math at school and at university. I just wasn’t good at it 😅

I was so confused with math, as a neurodivergent I make less top down assumptions than others. Which thing are we specifically talking about here? why not this? even 1 + 1 = 2 should be questioned, not for it's internal consistency, but for it's external justifications and the other options out there. and you might need to attack something from many new angles to be satisfied with why something is true, even though it follows from the rules already established.

I think people try at an early age have thoughts of becoming the BEST mathematician. Well.... maybe you will be or not, but at least first try It hard and see what you really become. Same for physics and engineering.

so important to hear women speak on this!! so many girls count themselves out of math & seeing women in stem/math is so important!

Why do you think it is not for you and who do you think it is for? 🥰

My youngest kid, my daughter, studied math in University. She got a good job before graduating, being recruited in her last year. Since and during the pandemic, while other were let go, she was promoted several times. Now, at 28, she works in a major consulting company, is financially independent. Goes wherever she wants, dances, has her own place… 🥰

I had a hard time with abstract math but a relatively easy time with things like numerical analysis and other applied concepts. The abstract math like geometric proofs turned me off math until I needed calculus for engineering.
