The latino experience is waking up super early with your mom yelling at you and ordering you to help clean the whole house.

It never occurred to me that some parents would let you sleep without complaining. 😳

ok so I wake my son at 10 everyday because he would sleep until 4 if I didn't and its not because he needed it it was because he stayed awake until 5am and is now in a bad routine but if he fell asleep at a reasonable hour and didn't wake up the next morning I wouldn't wake him id let him sleep

have you ever read 24/7 by Jonathan Crary? he takes a look at this issue from the lens of capitalism and labour, but he also discusses sleep as communal care. IDK how I didn't put what you're saying together with the idea of sleep stigma in families as abuse until now, but denying sleep happens on global, macro, and micro levels (case in point: history of Christianity and weaponized service > "protestant work ethic" in churches > my family's insistence that work is moral and rest is amoral > all of us being burnt out and disabled but maintaining the stigma of laziness because "sleep is for the weak" and we have to prove that we're "fighting" our disabilities bc we're "NOT lazy!"). that sleep scientist who says that morning people are an oppressive class was NOT kidding lmao

Not even just children. Partners do this too! I was in an abusive relationship and one thing I wasn’t allowed to do was sleep in the day time when my toddler would sleep 😳 I make sure I take naps now when i want it.

My family is a sleep supportive family but my husband’s family is not. When we stay with them my husband lets me sleep in and when I get up at like 8am the rest of the family has already been awake since like 5:30am and they all make remarks about me “sleeping in”. Its so bizarre and pisses me off

my take is: you can sleep as much as you want but the only mandatory quiet time is at night. No one should be tiptoeing in the middle of the day because someone decided to stay up all night.

If my mom is doing something I can't take a nap or lay down. She would literally beat me whenever I would take a nap after going to school and told me why would I need to rest when all I do is "sit and laugh" with my friends while she was doing chores at home.

I get people in the comment section’s point, HOWEVER it is neither manipulative nor abusive for a parent to establish sleeping schedules for kids… Kids struggle to know what’s best for them, and if you remember being a kid - you know that if you got to decide back then, you’d stay up all night and sleep loooong into the day. That is simply not sustainable, since your kid has to go to school and needs to learn to be a functioning member of society - regulate their sleeping hours so that they sleep when they have time for it (in the night). Ofc kids should be allowed naps, but if it affects their sleeping time in the night, and ultimately just makes them less productive during the day - Thqt’s not a healthy sleeping pattern if you want to be a functioning member of society.

At my moms I wake up at 5am and she’s yelling to clean the house, normally can’t even eat until she leave cause she’ll yell if she’s us eating. At my dads I can be in bed the whole day and he’ll creep around like a church, will only wake me up to give me food and even then he’s so silent about waking me up😭

I fell asleep on the couch recently and she legit woke me up and told me sleep is for the night time and only in a bed. But if she’s up everybody has to be up.

as someone from a sleep supportive family I dreaded having sleepovers with friends who's parents would wake me up, like why would you even want to wake your kids up early on a weekend instead of just letting them rest and enjoying your quiet morning? weirdos
