Step 1: Foot Placement Stand with your feet hip-width apart, toes slightly turned out. Position the barbell over the middle of your feet—right where your shoelaces start. Create tension by pulling the slack out of the bar—pinch your armpits shut and drive your legs hard into the floor. Step 3: Brace Take a deep breath and brace your core like you’re pushing out against a finger at your side. Hold that tension throughout the lift. Step 4: Ascent Push the floor away with your legs to start the lift. Keep the bar close to your shins. Remember, the lockout sequence is always knees, then hips, then back. Step 5: Descent Lower the bar the same way you lifted it—hips back first, then knees. Control the descent and avoid slamming the bar.
