• The famous phrase "Eclipse first, the rest nowhere" originated from a horse race in 18th-century Great Britain and is closely associated with the undefeated legend Eclipse. • According to several accounts, the phrase was uttered by a race official or onlooker during one of Eclipse’s early races at Epsom or Ascot. In that race, Eclipse had pulled so far ahead of his rivals - by over 240 yards (approximately 219.46 meters) - that the observers could hardly even see the others behind him. This overwhelming victory prompted the exclamation: "Eclipse first, the rest nowhere". In racing terminology of the time, “nowhere” referred to horses that finished so far behind they were considered outside the official range of placement, often meaning more than 240 yards. • About Eclipse (1764 - 1789): - He was named Eclipse because he was born on April 1st 1764, the day a solar eclipse occurred. - Throughout his life, Eclipse competed in 18 races and won all 18 in dominant fashion. He also won all 7 of his debut races, leaving no doubt of his superiority. - He was also a successful sire of sires, and his bloodline remains dominant in modern Thoroughbred racing through legendary descendants such as Northern Dancer, Mr. Prospector, and Sunday Silence.
