This makes me so nervous as a debuting author. But this is why I’m going through multiple editors, multiple drafts, alpha and beta reads. I’ve taken all the feedback I’ve gotten so far and implemented most of it, talked through the edits. I’m doing what I can to grow as an author and hoping this doesn’t end up being me 😭😅

I feel like booktok people don't like using their brain much and they don't like any stories that have "too much substance" or any conflicts that arent really superficial and shallow, idk if this makes any sense. Maybe my view is wrong, it's just how it seems like to me from what I see on here🥲

So, if someone has an idea that they really think is solid, do you think they should save it for later while getting the early writing out of the way?

Hang on so she’s 22 and was working on this book for 10 years? Meaning she published the first book she wrote when she was like TWELVE

I don't agree with your rule about the first book. definitely heavily depends on one's skills, how many stories they've written in general, education, local feedback from smaller stories, etc. But at the least, you should be having multiple drafts of a novel no matter what....if a book obviously needs to be edited as a writer, self publish or not, you didn't do your job.

BookTok actually inspired me to start writing again because most of the recommendations are terrible 😂

I know exactly who this is. I'm glad I didn't pre-order the book. It sounds like she built a company around this world she wrote about when she was a teenager, but didn't hire a good editor to help her flesh out the story. Sadly, this mistake may cost her a lot of trust in her audience.

Working in the creative field, learning that constructive criticism isn’t personal, but an extremely helpful tool, makes a huge difference for self growth. Criticism is what helps us learn and grow and be better, not an attack on our work. I find that newer artists/authors that struggle to take feedback and immediately become defensive, are stagnant and won’t be able to become better in their field. It’s okay to care and have a vision for your art but utilize feedback to make it even better! ❤️This is just my perspective on this authors situation, all the passion and potential is there, but it doesn’t seem like they are very open to valid criticism 🤷‍♀️

I actually just thought about it today. I wrote several novels with nanowrimo before I got published. It is necessary to practise writing as a skill

I know who you are talking about and this author excuses everything by saying that the characters have adhd or other neurodivergencies and that is why there is so much repeated and the voice sounds so disjointed. It’s as if they are taking personal offense and telling us that it is our fault we don’t like it. When in reality there are ways to keep that representation but still make it an enjoyable book to read

The book is Age of Scorpius by Audra Winter. I have a whole shelf on my bookcase dedicated to TikTok Indy author books I’ve purchased. I was floored by her writing. That she is the most successful in terms of sales stuns me. It concerns me how this will affect other Indy authors on TikTok.

in my undergraduate program there were students in my workshops who were OBSESSED with the fantasy genre to the point of thinking their magic systems, world, and characters were the pinnacle of writing. they could not use punctuation properly, even two three years into the program. I feel like there is a mentality of "if you don't like my work, it's just not for you" which is so toxic and resistant to change. writers need to know how to take criticisms! you can prefer fantasy (most ppl do these days) but there is a lot to learn from other books... we've lost sight of that. that's why fantasy has become so fast fashion lately, and as a fantasy lover, it's sad

i chose to search the book before buying it about a week ago when it came up on my FYP and found a video of the author basically degrading her readers in the comments for not “understanding” whenever someone had a criticism about the story. it was super off-putting to see the author basically saying “ask if you don’t understand something” i shouldn’t have to? the plot and writing should speak for itself? i shouldn’t have to search out the author to personally ask them to explain a plot point to me

Hey so kinda funny that I’m seeing this. I just started writing my own novel a week or so ago. Started working on my third chapter’s outline, dialogue, structure, etc. I’m sure this is subjective, but when is a good time to publish and how do you go about editing? Also, what’s the best way to find out what prose is “your voice”?

I've never been more happy that ive been a fanfic writer for YEARS before deciding to write my first book. Having so much feedback from others was so helpful, especially when it comes to world building.

If an author hasn’t had an editor review the book, the book should have it slapped on the front “NO EDITOR” so I can avoid it. People can edit and edit away at their own work but you need a peer review to ensure the story makes sense to others as it does to you. You created the world as an author but you need to be able to translate that world onto paper for others to immerse themselves in a way that makes sense, and if you can’t handle the criticism from an editor you should not be publishing books

I had a realisation listening to you. I'm currently writing a book with the clear intention to publish it, and I feel like I'm doing a good job (yeah, first manuscript, it will need a lot of editing, it's part of the process)... and I realised that yeah, I have like 8 finished ones that I would not consider publishing. I was unconsciously considering this one my first one, but I have to consider those other ones too, as part of my process of growth (I feel like a I went to a tangent there😅)

I think that its a fatal flaw to publish that story that you created in the 7th grade. As sentimental as the work may be to the author, most often that sentimentality is the product of nostalgia, personal relevance and sunk cost fallacy. Most to cling onto their 7th grade book idea can only try to haphazardly cram gathered writing skills into a project that has an irreconcilably flawed foundation

I remember seeing in her comments someone giving her contructive criticism about it and she got supppper defensive and kind of “know it all” saying she’s so experienced and has all these great people on her team, so I can totally see her editors giving her advice and her just ignoring it. She also excuses a lot of the criticism saying the reader just dosent understand her character’s neurodivergent mind and where I do belive every reader intakes information diffrent;y when 90% of your audience is confused I don’t care how you “look at it” clearly she’s doing somthing wrong. I just think it wasn’t ready to be published yet at all.

The first book I wrote sits on my hard drive waiting for me to go back and fix it. The fantasy series I wrote next that is 2 books sits on my hard drive, the 3rd book I wrote...sits on my hard drive. But my 4th one, that is the one that will be my debut and I've spent the last 7 months editing it. I'm an indie author, but I'm making sure my first book is the best finished product I can bring to market. I agree with you. I recently read to books that needed major edits.

I published my first book. I had multiple rounds of editing, including a couple of editors for developmental edits and a couple who did grammar and mechanics. I had alpha and beta readers. Is it a bestseller? No. Is it going to be a classic? No. 😂 But the reviews and feedback I've had are pretty positive... so I wouldn't tell authors they shouldn't publish their first novel. They just need to make sure they do their research, go through the whole process, and have multiple eyes on it with rounds of edits before publishing. Just my two cents.
