Been trying to say this man 😭 its either people disregarding the fact that black wealth has existed in this country for 100s of years. Or trying to play ignorant to the fact that most black people have been excluded from this lifestyle 🤦🏾♂️

Black elitism is still elitism. And the trouncing of black culture in media does not mean we should adopt white culture.

What you said isn’t the issue that sparked the debate. It sparked because a man said that Polo….the brand…was introduced to the black community as STOLEN urban street wear. And people lost it, even though he was 100% correct. It’s a doc that Complex has on YT (about 40mins long) called “Horse Power, Hip-Hop’s impact on Polo Ralph Lauren” that details all of this. Not only was it inner city street wear that was being stolen, but Ralph Lauren started altering some of his lines based on which pieces were being stolen the most. So while Oak Bluff and the demographics that communities like that represent are real, they are not representative of the relationship Polo has had with the black community for most of its time as a brand

THANK YOU! We all know why Ralph Lauren chose this story for second time for their black representation story. Luxury brands don’t want to acknowledge the influence of black urban culture. So they stick to exclusive elite campaigns.

Fr the collection itself is cool but the way people are defending black elitism and propping up the black bourgeoisie as if inclusive capitalism is the way to liberation is pmo

i think everyone is arguing different points. they are correct with Polo by RL, however some are also correct with RL in the Black community outside of boosting—and THATS the story being displayed, not the story others are referring to. both stories have credit to them from Oak Bluff styles to Lo Life Boys. Polo outfits in Fresh Prince of Bel Air is a great example of both arguments.

The discourse is getting out of hand. There’s sm to be said about the takes coming out lol. But yes. Two things can absolutely be true at once. The collection's existence can be meaningful in terms of representation and still warrant conversation around it, how fashion is never just about clothes but storytelling. And the story told can arguably lend itself to conversations around black wealth and aspirational elitism.

I also feel like context is also important here. Ralph Lauren has never reallyyyy been for street wear/poor ppl in general (like their stuff always given off polished soft life) If their brand has always been on the more on the luxury/expensive side…. Why in the world would they cater to anything else just to include black people. Like if they changed their branding soley for that reason, that would support the idea that the black culture/experience is one note…so ofc they catered it to a different black experience.

black excellence did nothing but separate us further. did we forget that black capitalism won't save us? did we forget that when black ppl "get on", they MOVE ON. there is no reaching back to pull anybody else up. there's just more people for them to step on to elevate themselves.

I think dandyism applies in the context of tailored fits and most of Ralph’s clothing is form fitting
