@kostudiocreates: In my studio, every tattoo begins before the machine ever turns on. I come from a Native Hawaiian worldview where skin, blood, and intention are all sacred. I layer protocol into every session with five oli: • A cleansing oli to clear away anything that doesn’t belong. • A protection oli to establish metaphysical and psychological protections. • An oli to focus my own mind and prepare for the kuleana of the work. • A silent oli for the client, to bless their thinking and support their mental and physical strength while they receive. • And one of gratitude when the work is done. Some are spoken aloud. Some are quiet. All of them are intentional. I stay pono throughout—from energy and attitude to tools and technique. That means full disinfection, protective barriers, responsible money practices, and honest communication. My apprentice supports the process too, helping redirect conversation and manage pain so I can keep the energy clean and the focus sharp.
