I also hate the parent shaming that comes with “people aren’t reading to their kids.” Reading to your kids doesn’t magically teach them to read. It’s important, but we can’t assume parents aren’t reading to their kids just because the kids can’t read. Especially if we don’t have a robust curriculum based on the Science of Teaching Reading. My district isn’t getting rid of Lucy Caulkins, which is a curriculum that only recently added phonics as an afterthought, until next year and I STILL hear the “parents aren’t reading to their kids” line. Like, okay, are you at home with these kids to KNOW no one is reading with them?
