This week, Hamdan Ballal, a Palestinian director that won an Oscar this year for "No Other Land," was attacked by Israeli settlers. The attack occurred in Ballal’s village of Susiya in the southern West Bank, which is part of the Masafer Yatta region featured in the Oscar-winning film. The documentary, by Palestinians Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal and Israelis Yuri Abraham and Rachel Szor, follows Palestinian residents’ attempt to stop Israeli settler attacks and illegal military moves to demolish their homes and occupy their land. Video footage shows a group of a dozen or so masked settlers throwing rocks and hitting a group of Palestinians and activists. While being treated in an ambulance, Ballal told the AP, he and two other Palestinians were then arrested, kept blindfolded, and endured punches and assaults by soldiers while in captivity. He mentioned hearing the soldiers repeat “Oscar” while being held. The Israeli military did not respond to Ballal’s claims. Shem Tov Luski, the identified settler who Ballal says has a history of threatening him, denied the claims he, his group or the soldiers, beat Ballal, saying he did not know he was an Oscar winner.
