Except that would've been super confusing because cultural / mythological dragons could breathe fire, hoarded gold, and existed at the same time as humans. Whereas the very real dinosaurs did none of those things 😂

Yall she’s saying the whole myth of dragons is based on people finding dinosaur fossils and not knowing what they were, most myths are explainable nowadays and half of them come from people who should’ve been wearing glasses

A dinosaur and dragon is not the same. Dragons are mythical made up things, while dinosaurs are real scientific findings

When ancient cultures discovered or invent things its folklore, mysticism, pseudoscience. When an english man says it, they put him on a pedestal and say he was the first

My favorite thing to think about is that a giant bird of prey like Argentavis is technically the closest Earth has ever gotten to a dragon/wyvern, genetically and morphologically.

The concept of a dragons being a massive lizard to is actually pretty modern. In medieval Europe they were usually described in snake like terms (the original ancient Greek term δράκων or drakon actually just meaning big serpent) or as a combination of various animals. They had the paws of dogs, faces of lions, necks of a snake and so on. Sometimes this snake like quality was used to just grant them scales. The identification of the first dinosaur bones influenced culture so much, that dragons suddenly became less diverse, to match dinosaurs. Most snake like features were abandoned and only the most dinosaur-like types of dragons survived the cultural shift. This wide shouldered, one pair of wings, walking on 4 legs, etc. type of dragon, as seen on the welsh flag, became the only type of dragon. So it’s kinda the other way around, early paleontologist did not necessarily make the connection of big lizard = dragon, as they were considerably less strictly defined than they are today.

“Dragon” comes from the greek word for “serpent”. Drakōn. “Dinosaur” as you mentioned, means “terrible lizard”. Deinos, sauros. Dinosaurs, even in their very earliest stages of discovery, weren’t considered very snake-like.

It makes the most sense that people throughout history found dinosaur bones and created the mythology about dragons from them. Naming them something scientific gave them credibility, even now in 2025 people are saying dinosaurs aren't real. If they were called dragons?? couldn't imagine

Now who in the comments is going to be the loudest because we're okay with the thousands of fossilized bird-reptile(!) animals that had brightly colored scales, heavy armor, horns, clubbed tails, massive claws and teeth, that could grow up to 30+ feet long and were found all over the world in sea, land, and sky that also co-existed with species that survived extinction and still exist on earth today like crocodiles and coelacanths but I have never even heard of a dragon

When they first found dinosaurs they didnt think they were related to dragon myths it was then later thought that maybe a lot of dragon myths were made up using dinosaur bones and no dinosaurs or there bones were not part of folklore even if the connection had been made eventually we would arrive at what we have now dinosaurs aren’t dragons and dragons aren’t real or even part of every culture we just ascribed anything lizard like to dragon wether or not it actually should be

"Hey guys I just discovered that dragons are real except they have no magic powers, they don't breathe fire, they're not supernaturally intelligent, they don't hoard gold, no myths about humans interacting with dragons are real... and oh wait- nvm I just realized these are completely different things" 😂
