“genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color … my genes are blue” for a jean commercial is crazy

Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle ad is a simple pun: “great genes” means her blue eyes and blue jeans. It’s playful, not political. The ad doesn’t focus on her blonde hair, which is dyed, and doesn’t suggest genetic superiority. True eugenics messaging pressures people to feel inferior or pushes ideas of racial purity, which this ad does not. The controversy is mostly people reading too much into a light joke. American Eagle is known for inclusive campaigns, and Sydney’s style is authentic and fun. This ad is a harmless pun, not a statement about genetics or race.

a blonde haired blue eyes person with them saying she has good jeans "genes" if we were in a different climate it wouldn't be as big a deal. if you choose to be okay with it then that's your prerogative

“jeans are passed down from parents to offspring. often determining traits like hair color personality and even eye color. my jeans are blue.” jeans and genes are homophones, meaning they are words that sound the same but mean different things. this choice was intentional. “sydney sweeney has great jeans” she is white has blue eyes and blonde hair, there was a certain event in history that determined these 3 traits as “great jeans”

Someone who studied and works in marketing and advertising.. we should be concerned. The past 5-10 years marketing has focused on being inclusive. Marketers went out of our way to show different colors and bodies. American eagle chose one person who they think has ‘good genes’ purposefully. Immigrants that are being deported and people of color don’t typically have blonde hair or blue eyes. Hope this helps!!

I don’t hate Sydney Sweeney (sue me) but I did think the “jeans/genes are passed down offspring/hair eye color/ mine are blue” was weird (like unnecessary but I don’t blame Sydney I blame American Eagle for that

The ads are heteronormative and focus on an attractive white woman. they are nostalgic and calling back classic Americana. a war was waged against All of those things. The reappearance of ads that focus on these things is infuriating to those that tried to destroy them

The sexualization isn’t the issue, I defended her when she was being called out for “catering to a male audience” instead of people calling out the men indulging in content or weird behavior, but this is a very weird and intentional ad. Just a reminder that marketing IS intentional, and someone who went to school for marking and works in marketing, nothing about an ad is EVER cut and dry. The ad itself is supposed to mimic the ad that Brooke shields was in when she was 14. Paying homage to something that was sexually exploitive of a child is a weird concept in itself. What people are upset about is how it is politically tone deaf in a society of rising conservatism being more abundant in our media and politics. Focusing on her blonde hair, blue eyes, white skin, and good body, IS intentional. The way they make her sound like a ditzy blonde, IS intentional. While I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s necessarily Naz!/eugenics Propaganda, the focus on those things were made intentionally and it is very ignorant as a large company to cater to not only a male audience when their primary consumer is women, but it’s ignorant in this political climate. Everything about art is political, and ad campaigns are art.
