Thailand Invades Cambodia: Armed Conflict Erupts Over Disputed Temples and Territory
Phnom Penh, July 24, 2025 – Tensions between Cambodia and Thailand escalated into armed conflict following a series of provocative actions by Thai military forces. Thai troops have reportedly advanced into Cambodian territory, occupying the Ta Moan Thom, Ta Moan Toch, and Ta Krabei temple areas, as well as the surrounding “triangular” zone, which Cambodia asserts as its sovereign land. Thailand allegedly used maps drawn unilaterally to justify its claims.
In an effort to avoid armed confrontation, Cambodia filed a formal complaint with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the United Nations (UN), seeking a peaceful resolution. However, Thailand refused to appear before the ICJ, instead closing its border unilaterally and cutting off electricity, internet access, and fuel supplies to Cambodia.
On July 24, 2025, the situation worsened when Thai forces began laying barbed wire within Cambodian territory. In response, Cambodian frontline troops removed the obstructions. This act triggered a military escalation: Thai forces opened fire on Cambodian soldiers, resulting in casualties. Cambodian troops returned fire in self-defense.
The following day, Thailand launched heavy artillery shells—including cluster bombs—into the area surrounding Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ancient temple sustained significant damage. Reports also indicate that Thai forces targeted civilians and deployed F-16 fighter jets to violate Cambodian airspace. Moreover, there are credible allegations that Thailand used chemical agents against Cambodian territory.
The international community is closely monitoring the unfolding crisis, which threatens regional stability and risks broader conflict in Southeast Asia.
