@swyte17: Replying to @Imileigh☮️ balancing the feeling that you’re helping someone, but also potentially hurting someone financially is a difficult thing to work with every day. ##emt##paramedicstudent##emergencymedicine

But we don’t blame you for it. We appreciate the offer to help and we actually feel guilty hindering you by trying to save the money. You’re not the face of the debt. The ambulance is. You’re the face of the relief of the possibility to live and survive. Please put that out of your mind and heart. Debts come and go but our stress over not being ABLE to BE injured even if we are.

You might be feeling something called moral distress. Healthcare workers have all the responsibility to save people while insurance companies & hospitals hold the authority, and they usually act to the detriment of the public. That’s what’s holding America’s healthcare system upright. It’s all balancing on the moral shoulders of healthcare workers. You carry the guilt for their wrongdoings. It’s 👏 not 👏 sustainable 👏. Not for your mental health, not for the people.

This comment section is giving me hope. Thank you all, for understanding that I wasn’t blaming him. I’m an emotional millennial, but this has brought us together. Group hug 🫂

It made me laugh… we all know you’re offering a service that is truly needed. We promise we don’t look at you like we look at the po-po. You’re one of the good guys. We cheer for you at the end of the movie every time.

When I worked in the for profit part of the healthcare system I could never escape the feeling that if I was giving people lifesaving care for money and for my employer’s profit, I’m also denying them lifesaving care if they can’t pay for it to protect my employer’s profit and in the aggregate I think that made me who went to school to help people but ended up becoming an assassin for hire. Everyone I worked with was doing everything they could in a broken, understaffed, cruel system and didn’t care about the profits but watching people fall through the cracks because the system was built by people who had profit as the highest priority messed me up.

As someone who grew up with very ill and very poor parents who never put their health first and just got worse and worse, I learned throughout my life that your health and safety is more important than money. In the US we’re told our bodies are expendable but we exist to make money, save money, or pay off extraordinarily debt. The reality is as long as you are alive, everything can be fixed. Take the healthcare, learn how to navigate the financial stress, realize you are not your credit score, and we will figure out the rest when you’re on your feet with the years not “touching it out” as added to your life. ❤️

I was young and in my 20s and I had an accident. The ambulance came and I wasn’t hurt or anything really just shook up and they asked me if I wanted a ride to the hospital and I didn’t know any better so I said yes most expensive taxi ride ever.😳😳😳

It was a great joke. I’m glad there are EMTs like you. The one that treated me after my wreck had a sense of humor that was as much a treatment as any other he delivered. You didn’t break this system. Thank you for the work you do, and good on you for being so aware of the realities for your patients. It’s a tough job.

It's one of the worst non-gory parts of our jobs. I hate it too.
