I’m angry at Chi Cheng in this scene, but at the same time, I can’t help feeling sorry for him. I know it’s his fault — he could have chosen not to lie. He could have stayed silent and not talked to Wang Shou. But he didn’t. What breaks my heart the most is that Chi Cheng can’t tell Wei Wei the truth about his mother — not because he doesn’t want to, but because he promised he wouldn’t. Just imagine having to look the person you love in the eyes and tell them that their mother has cancer… and that there’s not much hope. Watching the person you love fall apart — how do you even handle that? That’s why I ache for Chi Cheng. But even more than that, I ache for Wei Wei. When he finds out, it will destroy him. And what will hurt him the most is knowing that the one person he trusted the most — Chi Cheng — knew all along… and kept it from him.
