I saw your comment to another commentor about being a christian, and this is my thoughts as a christian, and ordained pastor, on this topic. ❤️I have worked in hospice for many yrs. I have seen death with dignity patients and thousands of deaths without. For myself, as a patient, I would choose death with dignity. If I had the option, in my state. I am a born again christian. With hospice, I cannot be guaranteed a non traumatic or no shortness of breath death. More often than not, breathing is the issue towards the end. If we are dying from a terminal diagnosis, taking medicine that puts us to sleep, just like the other medicine does, but at a different time frame. I do not see that as taking the easy way out. Most of my patients have been through so much. (I would already be dying, the dr has given me a terminal diagnosis and a hospice referral with a life limiting expectancy) I've talked to other priests, pastors, and chaplains about this. They agree. If you are already dying from a terminal diagnosis, taking a medication, that gives you control over over your symptoms of death, isn't taking your life. (The cancer or other disease is taking your life. You are taking a prescribed medication to ease symptoms with the same end result) (**This is only my opinion❤️) Being a christian, I have thought about this alot. I see a big difference in the death itself as well. I have had zero patients families have regrets. I have many patients families wish they would have opted for the death with dignity afterwards. It offers autonomy and the last control some patients want. The other positive is, you just go to sleep. Its much less traumatic for families, when our patients are home. At the end of the day, this is an extremely personal decision, and I'm so sorry the Dr brought this up in front of your minor children. I just wanted to let you know you're in my thoughts and prayers.
