@mouseabolition: like once lasers start coming out of a man’s eyes i don’t care about physics. i DO care about how that character relates to the world around them. #kennarambles #superman2025

Snyder didn’t want to write a Superman movie he wanted to write a powerful superhero movie and used Superman as the medium and that’s why it didn’t work

him spending most of the Kaiju fight trying to mitigate damage and casualties while the justice gang focuses on just fucking the thing up is so important in this distinction to me.

The scream of anguish 2025 Superman has for one person dying is more emotion than Man of Steel Superman had for thousands of deaths and that's why MoS Superman doesn't work for me

It’s not the property damage in MoS so much as the fact that we don’t see him save anyone before that property damage. Superman 2025 takes the time to save a squirrel, I believe he saves everyone before any damage to property takes place

my personal theory is that Pa Kent in Man of Steel deliberately let himself get caught in that hurricane so that he wouldn't need to spend another moment around his wet paper bag of a son

The core difference between the two is that Snyder wanted Superman to be a cop or soldier. Gunn understands that Superman is a firefighter.

that scene in MoS where some drunk trucker pours a beer on Clark’s head and later the guy comes out to see his semi mangled up and it’s meant to play as this comedic gotcha beat—i HATE that scene it’s so antithetical to everything Clark/Superman, like that’s the kind of scene that would’ve happened in Smallville and the entire episode would’ve been dedicated to teenage Clark learning why that was WRONG

Also… the physics of how Superman rescues people is famously nonsensical even in comics 🤪🤪 like we could give a nerdy answer for why Superman can pick up massive objects without them coming apart in his hands but the nitpickers aren’t trying to here that

This made me think of something a bar manager (one of my favorite managers) said to me a decade ago: I'd rather have an employee who is only capable of 50% but cares 110% than an employee who is capable of 100% but only gives 60... Superman 25 wants to be good at the job. He cares. He's here to do his best with a good attitude. As someone who grew up in small town Kansas, that's what I always thought Midwestern work ethic meant. It was cool to see that captured.

reminder that Omni-man, a character intentionally written to be a villain who doesn't care about humanity, has saved more people on-screen than Snyder's Superman.

another thing is when he was fighting the monster and it did the fire breath into the building, he turned around and checked that the people were okay. and I'm pretty sure he hadn't seen the fire breath before that so he clearly hadn't planned for it, and right after he sees that he makes it look up so nobody got hit! which just shows how easy it should be to show that heroes care about the random bystanders in a tangible way, he limits damage as much as possible and it shows in the writing so well!!

Snyder can only see the world the way they Lex Luthor does: through a lens of innate hierarchies and justified supremacy. Gunn positioned Kent in a lens of equitability. Superman 2025 doesn't see his labor and life as innately grater than Mali's.

Interestingly enough, both Gunn and Snyder agree on one core conceit; People would be scared of a seemingly all-powerful otherworldly force. They take two very opposite routes to address this. Snyder just says "Yeah, they're right and they should ne afraid" and his version of Clark makes zero effort to address that. Gunn says "Yeah, they might", but his version of Clark is gonna be as charming and friendly as possible and even make his suit a little silly and bright to help people just feel a little safer with him around.

I could handle him killing zod, that was never my problem, I could see where that’s his “no killing” stance evolved from. It’s not my Superman but I could understand that choice. This one was EXACTLY the MoS choice I couldn’t meld with. He didn’t care about the fallout, and it broke me

I saw someone describe Superman (2025) as "A movie for people who clap when the airplane lands" and I just have to say if that's the case then Man of Steel is a movie for people who clap when the plane is involved in 9/11

A lot of Zach Snyders movies have fascist undertones too and that’s a huge reason why all his superhero movies completely fail as both deconstructions and standalone stories. He continuously tries to adapt a deconstruction of something he completely doesn’t understand what is originally being deconstructed and then tries to deconstruct the deconstruction. He’s got an eye for cool images, but it’s literally all flash and awe. There’s no deeper meaning or interpretation to his shots other than what is being shown, and his fans believe because they can actually decipher what’s being said in an image that they are pseudo intellectual film buffs because they can’t in any other movie, thus leading to the conclusion that it’s not them who’s misunderstanding something, it’s everyone else despite the fact Snyders movies require nearly no creative interpretation or imagination to actually decipher what’s being presented.

2025 knows that truly immense power means you can exert more control and restraint while still getting the job done. That's why this Superman saves people and property while fighting simultaneously. He's SO STRONG that he can afford to try and keep the monster alive rather than just blowing a hole in it. Man of Steel uses his excess strength to aura farm and hit his enemy into buildings even harder, when he didn't need to do either of those things lol.

There’s this line that stands out for me in the DCEU from Superman: “no one stays good in this world”. And that encapsulates the problem with DCEU Superman vs DCU Superman (and honestly most other Supermen). Like on some level, that Superman believes humanity is wholy unredeemable and that he is so above it, so beyond the pettiness of humanity and their flaws. It encapsulates this wrong idea of Superman being this stone faced god among men, that doesn’t believe in the inherent goodness of humanity, and probably never has because of what was kinda drilled into him by at least one of his parents which raised him, and reinforced by his AI father and it’s just…idk it just wasn’t Superman.

Man of steel is about the burden of being a superhero. Superman is about wanting to save everyone because good people are heroes, he’s just super.
