That amount of soot can be a multitude of factors short trips, stop and go traffic, over fueling and not letting the engine properly regen.

to much short distance driving. Engine is not at full operating temp for a long enough time to burn the soot.

So the main principle is to collect the soot and then burn it off later as ash. I guess it has something to do with the fact that ash is safer for health than soot and soot tends to hang around in the air while ash settles. But how do environmentalists justify generating over double the carbon emissions just to accomplish this. More actually if count the fact that my milage is cut in half during a regen PLUS all the milage you lose over the lifetime of the truck due to the restrictions. There's no way it can be worth it environmentally speaking.
