Genes don’t exactly “always” determine traits (epigenetic modifications are also determinants of traits, are passed down from parent to offspring, and don’t actually change/alter genetic code). On the other hand, some genes are not passed down from parent to offspring, such as those resulting from de novo/germline mutations and mutations acquired through ones lifetime. “In humans, the average number of spontaneous mutations (not present in the parents) an infant has in its genome is approximately 43.86.” The script is worded terribly imo, but I hope nobody’s getting their education from a jeans commercial.
