In the manga it’s presented more as a “fleetingness of life” moment, in one panel she’s alive making the promise, and next panel zoro is learning she died. It’s meant more to cement zoros will. Toei must’ve not liked that so they just made it seem like he did it for some reason

I never liked the "falling down the stairs" as a euphemism thing either. I don't think she killed herself. I just feel like she was too young and motivated by Zoro to do that. I don't know if I necessarily agree with this theory, though. It could be possible that the guy she beat did it out of anger that he lost to someone, not only as young as her but a girl.
