My parents scowl at everyone of my tattoos. I have almost full sleeves. And have told me multiple times it makes me less attractive. I love them. I’ve been getting tattoos for 15 years. And bonus points bc I have vibrant hair.

My grandfather used to tell me all the time "you're so pretty, but you'd be even prettier without those things on your face" when talking about my facial piercings. I finally got sick of it and told him id get a new one ever time he complained. I never heard another comment on them since 🤣

I've been wanting to get a tattoo as well and my mom's husband had the same visceral reaction and then he told me "you can't even handle pine needles on the bottom of your foot how are you going to handle a tattoo"............. I'm not getting a tattoo on the bottom of my foot

Yep.. nail on the head with the idea of ownership. People are not property.

Usually the parents who don’t see you as your own person. They still see you as THEIRS. They made you and the god complex they have for that means that for you to change anything about yourself somehow is an attack on them… it’s kinda sad really

My dad yelled at me for 4 hours about my septum piercing. It’s been 3 years since then and he’s said maybe 6 words to me since then. I was 29 when I got it done.

Idk my dad wanted me to look a certain way. Always said "girls don't like this or that" it was frustrating. Hair, piercings, tattoos, stretching my lobes. It was frustrating. Wonder what his thoughts were when I came out as trans.

I'd be concerned if the tattoo going to be on their face, they need to grasp the real potential consequences of that.

Having listened to my mother ranting at various times through my childhood about tatts etc.. it took two YEARS for her to realise id had my tongue pierced, my dad had to leave the room because he was trying not to get a bollocking for laughing 🤣 she opened her mouth to rant, saw my face and decided to just sit in her pissy mood for the rest of the day. She saw my memorial tattoo and made the very wise choice to stay silent.

my kids used to ask when their tattoos would show up when they were little because my husband and I are both covered. I'd be at that appointment holding their hand. Their body their choice.

When I got my first tattoo, my dad’s friend happened to be at the same convention. He took a picture of my tattoo and as a result my dad stopped talking to his friend, because “it’s your job as my friend to stop my daughter from doing stuff like that.” I was 26 years old and both me and my dad’s friend are SAILORS. My dad and I no longer speak. Not because of this incident but because of many many incidents just like it.

Until extremely recently, and it's still prevalent to some extent, tattoos were associated with criminals and 💊 users. Its even culturally a no no. And yes, jobs would deny you employment for tattoos, even if not visible in uniform. Some parents still think this and are genuine in their concern and some aren't. Its a mixed bag.

I am a tattoo artist and it is surprising how many adults tell me that they will be getting crap from their parents for getting tattooed. It is definitely a control issue
