@mattupham: Will AI replace software engineers? I’ve worried a lot about this in the past years. And while AI has helped speed up my productivity (thank you Cursor and Claude code) - it still hasn’t replaced my job completely It’s enabled me to do more though! And the job itself is pretty different than it was a few years ago - There will be higher demand for software since we’re enabled to build more - The tools get about 80% of the way there - it’s a lot harder with complex features to one shot these. There still needs to be human review and some manual work - AI hallucinates, and more hallucinated content is out in the wild, which might be trained out in future models, this will be interesting… Craft is one thing that makes software stand out. Polished UI, speedy apps, making apps easy / a joy to use. This is hard to do by AI, there’s an art component to it Will software developers be completely replaced? Let me know in the comments

Layoffs aren’t due to AI. They are due to outsourcing, slowing economy, higher interest rates, and overhiring during COVID
