In Australia the gov is introducing age restrictions on social media and I’m sympathetic to the anxiety about kids online but it feels like a backdoor route to increased surveillance of the whole population, but also like it won’t stop kids doing sketchy stuff online. The general population doesn’t understand technology well enough to know that it’s not possible to implement this law without dangerous invasions of privacy.

Literally how it’s gonna go is: Block adult media with Id verification, slowly begin to try get people accustomed to id verification until ppl see it as normal for accessing everything

They don’t care about kids. Their entire job is to use kids as a cudgel to manufacture consent for dismantling rights and protections and bodily autonomy and access to healthcare and medical privacy and data privacy and dismantling access to free/cheap education via libraries and public schools. THATS ALL IT IS EVERY TIME AND THEY FALL FOR IT EVERY TIME

In the US, under the current admin, and with the current corporate leadership for most large companies, there is no way all this ID and face scanning is not used to expand mass surveillance. We're about to graduate to 1984 levels of the surveillance state, either directly by the government, or indirectly through companies like Palantir.

They've just implemented this kind of "protection" for minors in the UK. Take a guess of what has happened to LGBT resources, content trying to help kids suffering abuse, & content related to Gaza? It was never about protecting kids, it's about giving the government the right to decide what you're allowed to see.

People cant go on discord, one man is banned from discord for a year bc the facial age verification system labelled him a minor. Its dystopian. Games with menstruation are banned from steam. If an evangelical christian is on your side, be wary. If the people trying to sway you are using words like “lustful” be wary.

Just because something counteracts a problem does not mean it’s a solution. People dying of dehydration/starvation will literally die if they’re allowed to just eat/drink as much as they want. Hot baths can kill hypothermia patients. Hell, even our own bodies induce a fever to fight infections, but that fever can kill US TOO. Running to the opposite of a problem will more-often-than-not bring you a worse problem. Nuance. Discernment. Critical thought. USE THEM.
