Brian is a critique on how messed up the foster and mental health system in America is and how it can worsen someone rather than helping them.For example, the guy at the mental hospital who brian thought cared for him used brian(he was exchanging brians meds for money and his own personal gains). Before he was sent to the hospital,he was bullied at EVERY foster home he went to and when he stood up for himself, he was labeled a freak and that he needed to leave and move from the house. If Brian was given the chance to be nurtured the same way Doris Morgan nurtured Dexter, he would have turned out different. People like Vogel and Harry were labeling Brian and Dexter as people with no emotions even though Brian felt the need to care for his brother, even as a kid in the shipping container comforting dexter.
