I taught my kids, "It doesn't matter who has the right of way, you need to know who has the right of weight. If they can't stop, it doesn't matter who was right or wrong." Also. "Everyone on the lake is drunk except you."

The sailing club takes all the precautions in all my years I have never seen a barge in that area. They must’ve been coming from some construction and some of the luxury homes. This is terrible for our sailing community. Rest in peace to those children.

Most people don’t realize it takes several miles to stop a barge. I’m sorry it was kids on a sailboat, but you can’t just stop a barge.

Anyone arguing looks like a fool lol. Sailboats are allowed in that area, and guess what… has the right of way over a power boat/engine. And while larger, can stop easier, navigate easier, and are supposed to have crew looking out for things like *sailboats*. There are VERY rare cases where a sailboat wouldn’t have the right of way over a barge. And in this stretch of water… the barge is going to be at fault. A lot of people are saying the sail boat should have anchored and this and that… I don’t think yall have ever been in a boat. In the ocean. There’s a good chance by the time anyone realized that the barge was going to go against the right of way … the would have either 1, been in the way or 2 too close and probably would have ended up capsized

If you are under power and you see an obstacle, you maneuver around it....these were kids, not professional sailors. I am not quite grasping your argument in finding the sailboat at fault.

Barges have the right of way on the water. I’m sorry, but the adult should have taken them far away from that boat. If they wouldn’t have gotten hit, the instructor would have been heavily fine. It is illegal to get that close to a barge in a sailboat.

makes no since why the two are even in the same area for this to even happen. it's obviously a camp for kids so why have a barge take a route through it. it makes no sense either way.
