In the city we're used to the fact that the only time a stranger greets us like that is because they're trying to scam us, rob us, beg for money or k*ll us. so we're always on edge around random politeness

Was just in NYC, leave people alone. Also, I have been living in a southern state for 10 years now, southerners are not friendly. They are also very suspicious of outsiders. They will be nice to your face but stab you in the back as soon as they can. Southern hospitality does not exist.
