There’s really no easy way to tell someone, however if you do and they have a problem thaen I would move on because I could never accept body odor and bad breath consistently.

I would have this conversation in person so he could see how much you liked him, your nonverbals. Perhaps make it about concern for a potential medical condition and also saying you've had bad days too.

I don’t care how diplomatic you try to be or how tactful you think you are some folks are still gonna be offended. I have two friends of 10+ years I can be honest with. I can tell her that her bref stank or ask her: Did you bathe yet? We laugh it off and keep it moving. With other friends absolutely not

I would want to know if I had body odor and the way he responded tells you more about him then about you. I’m sure you told him in a sensitive manner as you could.

this needed to be approached just as if he was your patient and mainly in person..not over the phone. he's heard this before but whatever he's using or not using is what needs to be brought to his attention. this was a situation to be explored, educate him, but not judge.

Yeah, that’s a tough situation. He could be a naturalist like Matthew McConaughey and not realize that you realize the odor. In-person conversations are always the best way to communicate. It lends to vibes and body language. Subtle hints, gifts etc… are always great.
