first villain was a woman who was just evil for evil's sake, she killed a bunch of people because she just didn't care. my last villain was a man foisted into godhood by his adoring followers, and became so drunk on the power that he became god-emperor, only to see the depths of corruption that came in his wake, and wanted to fix it. the party didn't know enough, got convinced by the propaganda of the new emperor (OG emperor's great-grandson) and fought the now fallen god, killing him before finding out everything, where they then rebelled against the emperor, only to die in the end.

I told my dad the goal of my long term villian and he asked "What have your friends done to deserve that kind of heartless behavior from you?" I had to explain to him that its just a story game, that we're all cool and im not actually doing anything, but he thinks "If you have the capacity for that level of hate or indifference, i worry the kind of man you'll become" (keep in mind the plot for the guy was forcing the entire world to magically become stronger so everyone has a chance to fight monsters and the weaker people who can't handle the power die as a side effect, and as to my friends its because he was a manipulator trying to convince the party that they should join him, and when that failed he got the parties families to join instead)

Everyone is comparing the charismatic villain to the "eldritch horror", but the true scariest villains are the charismatic ones that are all-too-human in their evil, but too powerful to kill. Sociopathic fascists that smile and then play with their victims, violating you with words alone but making you clench your teeth because you know that the only reason you're still alive is because it's more fun for him that way. (Strahd is the canonical example)
