You would treat mixing skin tones the same as you would mixing any other colour. So saying 'skin tones' is only something we say because we hear it a lot. There is no such thing as a specific set of skin tones because skin differs so much in different lighting, in different conditions, the complexion of the person, and so on- as does anything else really. If you were to paint a banana in dim light, then yellow is probably not what you will use to paint it. Nevertheless- "skin tones" baffle us at times because they are almost always a combination of the three primaries, and its the quantity of each primary that gets us when it comes to mixing. I often see brown being used as a starting point in many reels like this. They usually instruct us to mix a brown and then to add whatever colour we deem fit, and white in order to match it to the skintone we want to achieve. Instead, I suggest that the inverse is more effective. If the tone looks purple- mix a purple. Desaturate the purple with yellow (its complementary colour) and add white to heighten the value if needed. If the tone looks greenish- mix a green and desaturate it with... yep, red, then add white to heighten the value as required, and so on. If you want to know more, I'm gifting a free colour mixing tutorial (skin tone related) to those who sign up to the waiting list for my courses, which I'm launching this week. If you want to receive it, the link is in my bio/stories. Or comment that you'd like it below, and I'll send it to you x #skintones #colourmixing #colourtheory #oilpainting #portrait
