yeah i graduated college in 08 and it’s hard to explain to younger people what it was like. i mean, it was HOPE in all caps. obama had such a spell on everyone. i knew so many militant socialists and communists get swept up in his campaign somehow. a significant proportion of my program at my college (a school that was consistently ranked most progressive in the country) became staffers on his campaign or volunteered to phone bank. there was such a joyous atmosphere, we found him so incredibly charismatic, and convinced ourselves somehow that we were actually going to get real leftist policies through incrementalism. the next president after him would be even further left and so on & so on until we achieved utopia. there was real energy and morale was SO high. i’ve never seen anything like it since. the disillusionment later crushed a lot of people.

Despite all his shortcomings as a moderate, I am very uncomfortable when yt leftists disregard the significance of a black president to the black community. Ppl who scoff at those who remember him as a (relative) progressive and as a figure of hope vastly underestimate how important and unlikely it was that America elected a black man as president.

I hate those mfers who just hated Obama simply for being a black man. Like Jesus Christ dude I hate him too but now I feel like I can't say that bc mfers will think I'm agreeing with you rather than hating him for being a war criminal
