Night terrors are episodes of intense screaming, crying, thrashing, or fear during sleep that happen again and again, usually in children aged 3 to 10, but most often in the 3-7 age group. Only 1-6/100 children with have genuine night terrors but it is known to run in the family. Night terrors happen during non-REM sleep, usually about 90 minutes after a child falls asleep or in the first half of the night. Night terrors are different from common nightmares, which happen during REM sleep the lighter sleep in the second half of the night. Your child likely won’t remember a night terror episode the next morning, unlike nightmares, which they’ll often remember and be able to tell you their dream. Most episodes last only a few minutes, but it may take up to 30 minutes before the child relaxes and goes back to sleep. What Causes Night Terrors? Night terrors tend to run in families. Most of the time, they have no specific cause. But certain things might play a role, including: - Sleep deprivation or lack of sleep - Stress - Depression or anxiety - Fever - Sleep problems like sleep apnea - Restless legs syndrome - Medications that affect the central nervous system (the brain) - Recent anesthesia for surgery There’s no treatment for night terrors apart from comforting your child, but this disorder usually stops as a child gets older. We want to avoid waking your child during a night terror. A child having a night terror will only be confused and disorientated if you wake them. If you leave your child asleep, the night terror will be over more quickly and your child won’t remember it happened. Wait for your child to stop thrashing around. Guide your child back to bed (if they get out) and tuck them in. Your child will usually settle back to sleep quickly at this stage. If you think your child might get hurt, stay close to guide your child away from hitting or bumping the cot or bed or other obstacles. #nightterror #screaming #childwaking #sleepconsultant #baddreams #nightmares
