General Dynamics F-111F Aardvark Crew Escape Module (Ejectable Cockpit Section) with all the systems turned on and the Forward Nuclear Flashblindness Shield's deployed. It takes one pull of a cable to Deploy these special aluminum devices to Block light from entering the cockpit to protect the Aircrews vision if operations would be near enough to Nuclear detonations- Glad these never had to be used. The Left and Right Crew Entrance Hatches (Open in this video) have flexible 'Aluminized' Rubber flexible accordian-like curtains that fold down along the window line to complete the light-seal. The cockpit also has a power plug in point that could provide power to Special PLZT Goggles (EEU-2) that could be placed onto each helmet that did the same thing, except instantly via the Polarized Lead Zirconium Titanate lenses that would detect a flash and instantly darken. Normally only the FB-111A SAC (Strategic Air Command) Aardvark's carried these in operational service. This Crew Escape Module was successfully used in 1993 to save the Crew of F-111F S/N 70-2412 during a catastrophic engine failure and fire during a night lowlevel training mission over the Melrose Bombing Range near Cannon, AFB, NM. The F-111 fleet were powered by different models of the Pratt&Whitney TF-30 Turbofan Engine. This engine was originally developed as a commercial aircraft engine. The TF-30 prone to Compressor stalls and many also failed catastrophically like this incident. This Aircrew had no cockpit indication of FIRE, but noticed the glow of 300 feet of fire in the Cockpit Hatch Review mirrors. They zoomed to 13K feet or so and initiated ejection. One fun fact is a design flaw in the F-111: if a fire in the aft Fuselage burns too long the Actuator Rod that drove the massive Rudder on the vertical stabilizer would burn through and fail, with the Rudder Failing to one side INSTANTLY! NOT GOOD. A lesson learned the hard way. (not in this case) but that thought was in this Crew's minds as they Zoomed higher to make the Escape Pod's chances better for safer Parachute Deployment and decent. Every second counts!
