@raeletta: We get it if they’re young or disabled, but perfectly capable of doing it themselves? #horse #horsesoftiktok #fyp #misfitbarrelracer #barrelracing
A rule that my dad has always said it you don’t clean the stall brush it pick its feet satellite and then put the bridal on yourself. Then you don’t ride

I saw this a lot in 4-H a couple weeks ago... most of the kids at my barn that were at county Fair with me the parents were doing the work 99.99% of the time... I was pretty much the only kid doing 100% of the care for my own horse. 🫠 (and they were between the ages of 9-14!)

I can’t ride anymore due to an extremely bad injury. Getting the horses ready for my kids makes me feel like I’m still apart of the show. My kids respect the hard work I put in for them. They help out when needed and know how to tack their horses up.

I worked at an equestrian center and taught kids at the age of 6 and up how to groom and tack up their own horses. It was a requirement to ride. Period.

I completely agree but I feel like a little bit of a hypocrite to bc I will have my dad put my saddle on my 16’3 hand horse. Only because I am short and her saddle is very heavy. He doesn’t cinch her he simply sets it up there for me. My other horses I saddle myself tho

True story time… I was at a rodeo with my parents back in the mid 1990s. I always saddled and unsaddled my own horse. That night I had tied my horse to the trailer and my dad actually unsaddled her for me, loaded her up and left the rodeo… he forgot me! I had to get a ride from a man that wore more makeup than me (the rodeo clown 🤡) That was the only time my dad ever cared for my horse and the last time I just tied my horse to the trailer! I wasn’t getting left again!🤣🤣🤣 He honestly thought I had rode home with my mom but neither of them even noticed I wasn’t home until I walked through the door😩

I was like 15 and I won a qualifier at a barrel race and needed another horse to run so I borrowed one from a girl a couple years younger than me. Her dad saddled the horse for me. I didn’t know what to do, I hadn’t had someone saddle a horse for me since I could reach lol

I started at 5, and I had to groom and tack up myself. My instructor and mom both informed me they weren’t grooms!

THIS. There’s a difference between teaching your kid and doing it for them.

At small town shows and we don’t have stalls or places to tie excepted on our trailer and we don’t want to do that in case we want to move so I have my dad or mom hold my horse but I’m doing all the work.

My parents never saddled or helped me take care of my horse I was expected to do it all… the kids in my barn are soooo spoiled and lazy

As a trainer I require my (child) students to do it themselves especially since most of them are doing to the local open shows and fair/4h. For my adult ammys we are going to larger shows and they’re happy to pay for someone to do it.

Daughter does everything except drive the truck and pay for entry fees, vet bills, tack, etc. I will sell it all including the ranch if she ain’t working for it. She is the hardest working 13 year old I have ever met and begs for more animals to care for.

you know, I agree also though they might just be trying to keep busy, so let's not judge everybody in one category. There's so many other things to be concerned with I'm assuming.

My daughter is 9 and does everything 100% herself. Buying a stepping block for her was the greatest buy to help her independence!

My daughter is 9. I don’t trust her to get the pony saddled and not get horrible dirty in her show clothes. 😂 She absolutely helps cool him out, untack, and hose off.

Literally. I told her she could start leasing and showing when she could start tacking on her own. She started doing it on her own in third grade. 🤷🏼♀️
