you need a referral from your GP. it's possible the GP told her were to go and she just thought she didn't have a choice. unfortunately in Canada and the USA a lot people don't know they have more options than they think. in the US, even with insurance your network is usually very large and you can go to any hospital in your network even if not in your city or state. but people think they can only go to hospitals or doctors in their city. so instead of choosing the best option for them they only go to the closest option and do no research.

in my experience if you go to an obgyn office and there is both female and male Drs and they take your insurance/reg money you get to choose as long as they are open to seeing new patients. I've explained that I'm personally more comfortable with a female Dr and that I don't want a male looking at me like that/there besides my bf and they completely understood and was so sincere and nice about it

there is currently a case where a male doctor for a small municipality had 3times as many gyno exams than his female college, not only did he invent medical conditions to get the ones he liked coming back he recorded it from 7 different angels. when the police raided his office and home they found 7 strategically placed cameras in his office and boxes upon boxes of hardrives containing 5000hrs video recordings exclusively of gyn exams

if you don't realize that you get to pick and choose your doctor out of who is in network from whatever country you're in you don't deserve a choice if you are not informed enough to make that decision because anyone age 16 and up should realize that.
