I think people cared about this stuff before the echo chambers of social media, but they also cared about other things, which they don't have time for now. Mostly, personal relationships and friendly debate have suffered.

That’s the difference between ignorance & informed. Would you rather be ignorant to the fact that your wife was cheating on you with every man she ran across & doing things that was dangerously exposing you to STD’s Or just go on believing & hoping that she was faithful? We have been hoping & believing that our government was “faithful” to us, now We The People have found out that our “spouse” is a mean, stupid, dangerous, lying whore.
