@readyjetroam: These are the ones I wish would disappear forever. After 90+ countries and way too many mistakes, here are 5 travel tips I hear all the time that are just plain bad: ❌ 1. Pay in your home currency When you use your credit card abroad, you’ll sometimes be asked: “USD or local currency?” ✅ Always choose local currency. If you pick your home currency, the store sets the exchange rate — and it’s usually awful. Their bank gets a tip - and you lose money. ❌ 2. Always book round-trip to save money This used to be smart. Now? Not always. ✅ One-way or multi-city tickets can be cheaper and way more flexible. I once saved $300 flying into Paris and out of Nice - where I wanted to leave from anyway. Win-win. ❌ 3. Book flights on a Tuesday – it’s cheaper That may have worked a decade ago. But now prices change constantly based on demand, time of day, route, and your search history. ✅ Instead: Use Google Flights. Turn on price tracking and use the calendar view to spot the cheapest dates. ❌ Don’t bother with travel insurance I’ve heard this one too many times: “It’s a waste of money.” But here’s the thing — accidents and emergencies happen. ✅ When Matt needed emergency spine surgery in Austria, it cost over $22,000 — and we paid nothing. Travel insurance covered every penny and also paid for a month of unexpected hotel stays, meals, and missed flights. You should never travel without it. ❌ 5. Pack for “just in case” Extra shoes, outfits for every occasion, backup toiletries… it all adds weight and stress, and money. ✅ Instead: Pack light and versatile. You’ll have less to carry, more room for souvenirs, and fewer baggage fees to worry about. Most places have laundry anyway - and stores if you really do need something you didn’t pack. 🎁 BONUS: Comment GUIDE and I’ll send you our free packing guide - with links to our best travel finds! 👉Follow @readyjetroam for smart travel that saves you time, money, and stress 🌍 @readyjetroam ✈️ @readyjetroam 📸 @readyjetroam #traveltips #travelhacks

I can’t imagine anyone ever going away without travel insurance. I’ve been caught in a hurricane and couldn’t get home - what would I have done without travel insurance?? Things go wrong!!

If you’re leaving the country - get Global Entry. It replaces TSA PRE. The with a passport coming back to US had 400 people - Global Entry 20 - fast and breezy. Also, carry on dimensions are smaller abroad than US. If you plan to travel between countries AWAY small carry on works overhead with a back pack under the seat.

If you don’t want to pay for Global Entry, Get Mobile Passport Control. It’s free and worked like a charm recentering the US from Greece. Check to be sure your airport has it.

Are you talking about the insurance when booking a flight online or one that many credit cards include?

Book accommodation with laundry halfway through a trip that’s more than 5 days. Wash everything. Pack less.

I can vouch for #5. Luggage is lighter on the way there, and more room for souvenirs on the way back.

Agreed with everything except the round trip booking one. It depends on destination. We have flown out of the Bahamas on our round trip more than once and left folks behind
