In the dead of a freezing Chicago winter, a kind woman spotted a tiny budgie lying motionless on the side of the road. Wrapped in a scarf and desperate to help, she found our info online and rushed her to us. The moment we saw her, we knew her feet were in bad shape. Our vet confirmed both feet—and most of her legs—had been lost to frostbite. The dead tissue was carefully removed, and we gave her antibiotics, pain relief, warmth, and all the food she could eat. We honestly weren’t sure she’d survive the night. But she did. 💛 By morning, she was alert and eating. Over the next month, the remaining tissue healed, leaving her with just tiny stubs where her legs once were. And yet—she never gave up. Once healed, she joined our flock of homeless and surrendered budgies. At first, the big aviary was a challenge. But with flat perches, wide low dishes, and time, she figured it out—proving again how adaptable and resilient she truly is. Months passed, and while the others found homes, no one came for her. That is, until a wonderful family—who had already adopted two budgies from us—asked if they could give her a forever home. We said yes without hesitation. Twigy (formerly known affectionately as “Legless”) is now in a home with budgie companions, gentle care, and so much love. 🐦💚 Her new name is a sweet nod to the little “twigs” she has left for legs—and we couldn’t think of anything more perfect. Thank you to the amazing people who rescued her, treated her, supported her, and most of all, adopted her.
