There was a woman in Canada that wouldn’t take her TB meds & they actually did assign her someone to make sure she took it & then when she didn’t she had to go to jail to make sure she took them

I am an antimicrobial stewardship specialist and and the multiple times I have heard”so what do I do with the extras” THERE SHOULDNT BE EXTRAS WE GIVE YOU EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED TAKE ALL OF THEM WHEN YOURE TOLD or god forbid “oh if I save three then I can just take them the next time I get sick and they’ll work then too” NO YOURE DOUBLE WRONG PLEASE JUST DO WHAT YOU ARE TOLD

(I will say there are multiple types of antibiotics because allergies and side effects exist. I’m allergic to amoxicillin took azithromycin after my wisdom teeth removal and it gave me horrible heart palpitations and anxiety so bad I could barely let my dogs go potty in my own backyard without feeling like I was about to puke the entire time)

Twice I’ve had a doctor tell me to stop: adverse reaction to a fluoroquinolone (1 of a couple prophylactic after surgery); allergic reaction to ampicillin (after I TOLD them I had reactions to amox) and my labs came back no infection. That’s got to be confusing to some people! I’ll still finish even if it’s sucky unless the dr directs otherwise (& no more home rx of fluoroquinolones or cillins for me!)

agricultural runoff also contributes a fair amount to antibiotic resistance, doesn’t mean it’s any less important to finish your course of meds though. it’s amazing how even otherwise well-informed people experience such dissonance w/ this issue

There is fairly new evidence that this advice is not always correct 10.3399/BJGPO.2022.0170. If you are taking antibiotics for a bacterium that is ubiquitous it is probably better to stop taking antibiotics once you feel better (SAWB) as you cannot scorched earth ubiquitous bacteria, and every dose increases the development of resistance.
