I see so many older people with hiking sticks instead of canes because they're so insistent that they aren't disabled.

It took me 15 years and a pandemic to identify as disabled. I had a lot of internalized ableism and ideas about surviving cancer that made me think I was just stuck on that illness instead of accepting cancer had disabled me. It’s hard because the cancer survivorship community has its own ableism issues that I internalized for too long.

some people fundamentally misunderstand what it means to be disabled. a lot of people are under the impression it only counts if you receive disability benefits.

After years of debilitating and life altering pain I only just acknowledged earlier this year that I am in fact disabled. And I needed feedback from the disabled community to get to that realization.

This is absolutely true, and I think there's also a segment of the population that thinks "disabled" means "can't work" or "on disability". If that were true, workplace accomodations wouldn't exist under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

I think a big part of it is also the rise in people deciding what is or isnt "disabled enough" and forcing that onto others 😔

This is exactly what I’m doing studies on right now: predictors of a disability identity!
