🎸 Content & Theme: --- "Money for Nothing" is told from the perspective of a fictional TV or furniture store employee who complains about the seemingly effortless lives of rock stars and musicians. He watches music videos and cynically comments on how these stars get "money for nothing and the girls for free." --- 🧠 Criticism & Irony: --- The song is intended to be satirical. It reflects the envy and consumerism of a typical viewer who feels unfairly treated while others are rewarded with fame and fortune. It also takes a critical look at the media, fame, and class differences. --- 🎤 Controversy: --'- The song later attracted criticism for using phrases from the character's everyday language that are now perceived as homophobic. The band and frontman Mark Knopfler have repeatedly stated that the lyrics were deliberately written from the perspective of an unsympathetic character – and therefore do not reflect the band's opinion.
