@ianisfun: Suzetrigine was approved by the FDA in January of this year. It’s the first painkiller that blocks only one sodium channel! Sources: 1) Vertex Announces FDA Approval of JOURNAVX™ (suzetrigine) [Vertex] 2) New Painkiller Could Bring Relief to Millions [Scientific American]

fun fact! you’re not assigned to placebo usually for drug trials-you’re assigned ‘standard treatment’ (eg whatever normal pain killing looks like for that procedure) which keeps a statistical baseline but doesn’t unnecessarily torture study participants

sorry, lil pedantic thing, but as a voltage-gated sodium channel researcher, you would read "Nav1.7" as Nav (rhymes with "ave-" in "average") 1.7. The "v" refers to them being voltage-gated, but there are other types of voltage-gated channels (Kv [potassium] channels for example), so ya can't call them "v1.7". But sick video, it's exciting stuff!

It’s bizarre how opioids are so prevalent in the US. I have gone through multiple very painful surgeries, and never got any for pain. The only time I got any opioid at all was an IV one when I nearly ripped my arm off and they needed it so I wouldn’t pass from shock

The problem with painkillers is that you almost always become reliant on them

Potatoes are good :
Couldn’t it just be done on people experiencing chronic pain? My dad has chronic back pain due to something with his nerve being like permanently pinched/agitated. If he moves wrong he can induce a spasm that’ll last a few min of extreme pain. He already regularly gets spinal injections, I’d bet he would endure a spasm or two just to see if this would help him.

This Is Not Going To help for chronic pain, bc pain is not only dependent on signals but on pain cognition and interpretation on the brian (aka nociplastic)

I believe in this study the experimental group also had access to Tylenol and ibuprofen as a rescue drug. The frequency of use was not recorded. Big confounding variable

the v stands for voltage-activated. Nav1.7 doesn't mean that the potential is 1.7 Volts but that it's a voltage activated sodium channel, 7 standing for the 7th gene we've figured out

We’ll see if that makes any difference anytime soon. The first hurdle is making it affordable and getting it covered by insurance. I work in pharmacy and have received a few prescriptions for Journavx already, but we haven’t dispensed any due to the cost and it not being covered

wait isn't the normal way to measure pain in pain killer trials to give the intervention to one group, placebo to other, then offer traditional pain meds as top ups and measure how much trad pain meds each group used? I don't think patients end up lingering in pain.
