By Ajanga Moses Let’s be honest if you’re a Kenyan living abroad, chances are you’ve received that message. “Hey, kuna emergency... si unisaidie kidogo?” Sometimes it’s legit but too often, it’s a “crisis” that somehow involves funding a party, replacing someone’s lost phone, or paying for yet another “urgent” fundraiser that never ends. It’s exhausting. And it’s time we had a real conversation about it. 1. The Remittance Trap We love our people back home, and helping out is part of who we are. But many in the diaspora are feeling the strain of constant money requests. some even from distant relatives or long-lost friends who magically reappear when they hear you're abroad. Let’s call it what it is: abuse of generosity. Fake or exaggerated emergencies Requests to fund luxuries like baby showers, birthday bashes, or weddings A growing entitlement where people expect your hustle to fund their comfort And while you're helping others “enjoy,” your own dreams buying a home, starting a business, saving for retirement get pushed further away. The Hidden Cost of Giving The emotional toll is real. Many diaspora Kenyans suffer silently from: Guilt if they don’t send money Stress from juggling multiple jobs to support both home and abroad Burnout from trying to be everything to everyone All while your own bills pile up. Redefining Help: Give When It Truly Matters It’s time to rethink what support looks like. Help real, meaningful help should focus on critical needs, not convenience. Here’s where your remittances truly matter: ✅ Medical emergencies (verified ones) ✅ Funerals and burials for close family ✅ Food and basic survival needs ✅ Natural disasters (e.g., floods, drought) Everything else? Should be handled locally, by adults capable of making adult decisions. Build Progress, Not Dependency If people back home are always asking for handouts, maybe it's time we ask: Are we empowering them or enabling them? Are we giving them tools to grow, or just bailing them out over and over? Instead of repeatedly sending money, consider: Supporting someone to take a short course or learn a skill Helping with a small, accountable business investment Sharing knowledge, mentorship, or job leads not just M-Pesa receipts Learn to Say “No” Without Guilt This may be the hardest part. But it’s also the most necessary. Set boundaries. You don’t owe everyone a response. You don’t have to fund every fundraiser. You are allowed to say: * “I’m focusing on my own goals right now.” * “I can’t help this time.” * “That’s not an emergency.” Final Word: You’re Not Being Selfish. You’re Being Smart You worked hard to get where you are. Maybe you left home for better opportunities, stability, or safety. That journey deserves respect from you and from those who benefit from your effort. So no, you’re not an ATM. You're not a bottomless well. You're a human being with dreams, bills, and a right to build your own life. Help when it matters. Give wisely. Protect your progress. Let’s normalize responsible giving. Share this if you’re tired of the black tax. 💸 #ajanga #magizanientertainment #kenyantiktok #kenyansinusa
