Hi Allison, I’m an ICU nurse too. I have a couple of questions. One is why is an ICU nurse talking to somebody about their cancer treatment? Aren’t you putting the cart before the horse? And two, of course he should go on vacation. This man needs some joy in his life since he’s being hit with one of the most devastating diagnosis many of us can.get

I wish we could get rid of the idea of “fighting” and “beating cancer”. We can treat cancer. But using other terms makes cancer patients like my father, feel like they have to do anything and everything offered or they have “given up” or “lost”. He was terminal and underwent treatments and lived well and longer than anyone expected until he didn’t. Then it was slow, & painful with additional time and pain spent “treating” him because he’s not a “quitter” and won’t let cancer “win”. Taking a few more trips, extra days with grandkids or just enjoying relaxing at home would not have made him any less of a “fighter”, it wouldn’t have made him a “quitter” and he may have had a couple more good months rather than 8 really bad ones. Everyone can, and should, make their own choices but we need to change the vocabulary regarding terminal illness’s and de stigmatize hospice.

I feel like cancer always wins in the end. You may battles, there may be some good year, there may be remission but it always comes back. It always wins in the end. Go on that vacation. But a good vacation. Not the Jet2 holiday.

My uncle had a kidney thing he did everything he wasn’t supposed to do to that MAX he knew he time was coming. He ended up dying while scuba diving in Mexico
