@calvin.seattle: When Lake Washington connected to Lake Union, the lake dropped 8 feet, and the Black River, its former outflow, dried up. The Black River Village was a Duwamish Village that found out about the Locks opening after the river they had lived on went dry in a single day.
Diverting waterways in WA was environmental racism.

I’m upset that I got an environmental studies degree in this state and was never taught about this

Don’t forget they also diverted the white river from the green into the Puyallup

I used to work as a restorationist and worked on the Duwamish River superfund sites, the soil was so contaminated that some teams had to wear personal protective gear to avoid it. Still, we saw some seals swimming around

Not only did they divert the Cedar, but when they opened the Montlake (Union & Federal) Cut, they drained Lake Washington by 9 feet, drying up the Black River, killing any continued navigation on the river & destroying the habitat for wildlife. It's just a creek now.

Good video. I find it strange however to feel bad for salmon when seals feast on them when humans farm salmon in horrific conditions and eat way more salmon (farmed/fished/etc) than seals ever could.

it's important to remember that at this point we probably can't send the Hydrology back to how it was given the fact that I-90 was built and it requires the Lake Level to stay at the lower level

Not only that, but the seals and sea lions are overpopulated by the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The local tribes have the treaty rights to hunt them but are prevented from doing so.

I learned about the crazy change in the river systems when I worked on the Cedar River collecting Sockeye. This resulted in the decline/extinction of some salmon species by changing the flow direction. Would be impossible to fix the hydrology of the area now sadly.

Don’t they use small explosives during the run to scare seals away?
