Thailand capitalized on the devastation faced by Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia during years of bombing and war. While those countries were left to rebuild from ashes, Thailand advanced politically, economically, and culturally. It aligned itself with Western powers, allowed U.S. bombers to launch attacks on its neighbors, and stayed untouched by the same level of destruction.
At the same time, it began rebranding regional culture as its own. Lao and Khmer food, dress, architecture, and dance were marketed to the world as Thai. What the world now recognizes as โThai cultureโ is often a blend of traditions that were never solely theirs to begin with.
Thailand has long positioned itself as the leader of Southeast Asia, but it did so by stepping over countries still healing from war. Opportunistic is an understatement.
