@studioesper: Replying to @saserohyn Yuki Pt. I - Support, sacrificed, erased. Yuki’s early death ultimately collapsed the overarching plot of JJK. #jjk #anime #manga #studioesper #media #analysis
Your acc has actually given me a lot more insight on how bad Gege is with writing women 😭 I knew the whole yuki thing felt out of place and I KNEW it had something to do with her being purposely set up as a foil to Kenjaku and it going nowhere thank you for putting it into words

Such great points. For yuki to die for choso as well made no sense. Choso later on didn’t do anything for the plot except to die and Yuki to sacrifice herself for a man she just met felt so out of place. Todo wouldn’t have done that and he was trained by Yuki and obviously inspired by her as they both ask their opponents questions about their type before they fight. And I wish we got to see Yuki interact with Yuji or Maki, or nobora or with Todo, Gege set it up in a way where it would have been a such an interesting dynamic

Bruh Gege is just an average Japanese man writing his first manga. He literally said in an interview that his editor helped him finishing the story (because he just didn’t know what to do and it shows). He also said that he read a lot of books about how to write a good story and he hopes his next work can be better

Yuki’s death was the moment I felt more critical about the story. I’d hear Gege out on so a lot but killing a character off like Yuki who felt like she had so much to say about JJK’s world was so jarring.

Jjk is like, the anti one piece in this regard. Design wise it’s fairly respectful to its women, but writing wise it’s awful. One piece has great writing for its women (for a shonen), but cannot design them respectfully whatsoever. Also jjk cut off plot lines early when it could’ve used more time and one piece takes plenty of time to build things up and gives them a satisfying payoff

when analyzing a story I always try to take into context who the story is being written for. that being young teenage boys because this is a shonen manga with seinin tones. we've heard from gege that he has an issue with writing himself into corners because he makes his characters too strong. Yuki the second strongest special grade sorcerer of the modern Era needed to be eliminated because if she hadn't the plot would have no reason for Sukuna to be a final threat. whether or not her ideology makes its way to the screen is irrelevant because ultimately teenaged boys who watch shonen anime broadly like to see things resolved in battles and not contrived plots that's why kenjaku's plan doesn't end up prevailing and why People don't like how Sukuna steals megumi's body to kill gojo because ultimately the things being written aren't for those who analyze the story on a grand scale. if Yuki survived, 1 kenjaku has no way to seal her or stop her plan and there there's no extended Shinjuku showdown fight because Sukuna Gets crushed into a fine powder

no kenjaku’s death felt so weird and cheap. especially flipping back and forth between it and gojo v sukuna.

JJK needed an extra arc for the Culling game resolution/Tengen/Merger to solve and explore all the world building that was getting set up, I honestly thought that was what Gege was getting into after the Sukuna fight, those ‘these are the last 5 chapters!’ Felt so sudden

This is why I don’t get the fandom critism on gojo death, that energy all needed to go to yuki deaths because that one was actually lazy writing , she was intentionally written as a foil for the main antagonist only to be offed for choso development , and I love choso but Yuki character was one who literally dedicated her life to her personal belief’s / goals to the point most sorecers don’t even know her that well etc I’m sorry but it js doesn’t make sense to throw it all away

If JJK was a life action series, I doubt audiences would be as receptive to the writing. It is saved by its fun action sequences, but there is so much vacuum to its characters.

this is so mind-blowing how gege created all those really interesting female characters just to get rid of every single one of them despite it affecting the plot so much

i found with stuff like junpei’s death and nanami’s death i was like wow this is raising the stakes. until i realized with yuki’s death that i was like ohhh this isn’t actual storytelling, this is aura and hype moments 😭😭😭

I would disagree with one of your main points…. The strongest DO decide the rules of the world. That’s how it works in one piece… that’s how it works in jjk if you lose your title as strongest through battle… nuff said. Your ideology will likely die with you

the point with ideological values can’t be fixed with battles made me think about naruto and how his battle with pain was a conversation i never really thought about it until you stated that i know naruto isn’t a perfect example because how its female cast is treated but just thought it interesting

Yuki was propped up as maybe the only women free from the misogyny of the jujitsu world because of her strength. She however did not create a world where women were accepted only one where she was tolerated due to her strength. This naturally leads to her death when she meets a man stronger than her.
