“Let Them” like Mel Robbins says. Maybe a little different, but don’t freak out and start screaming at your kid when they get close to the pool. You don’t want this weird precedent, about water. You want them to understand it, EARLY. And you want them to know what they ACTUALLY can do, in the water. Its not calling out where the deep end is either. When you’re 3 years old the WHOLE THING is the deep end. But- As they learn how to swim, that doesn’t even matter. A 3 year old doing a proper circle swims around your body in the low end, keep creeping down the pool, now your in the deep end, and the kid is doing the same work. They don’t even need to know it. This guy walks around more cautiously and smarter already, 18-19 months old, then some 3-4 years olds i get for lessons, and see commonly at my shops. If he fell in, ok. I was right there looking right at him. Owell, learning opportunity. Controlled environment. And, its completely fine because he hangs on the ladder, and would know how to just simply, GRAB This makes them less curious. An artificial device doesn’t create this. They need to do some dangerous things carefully. If he decided he wanted to go in like this, I would have just casually gotten in with him, and let him do whatever he wanted on that ladder. Playing the floatie on/off/on/off/on/off, artificial buoyancy, you are creating none of this awareness. Your child’s idea of water is completely random. Like they think they are good at swimming, but they’re actually terrible. They get celebrated for mechanics that so clearly are inefficient. And their parents trust them, to be in this device, but are told they are excellent and brave, but also that they can’t swim. That is ALL OVER THE PLACE. If you know a new parent, share this with them. Tell them its from a guy that’s been working with families for 2 decades. This is how you make your child water safe. Infant survival swimming early.
