This is the reality that I feared during my undergrad in ~2016/2017. I was studying rhetoric, communications, and AI through a course called "next generation narrative", which explored how technology will change how we communicate and frame our understanding of the world. This is precisely the reality-bending advantage that AI gives us. It doesn't have to be perfect to fool people, and because we tend to react viscerally to things + it's easier to tell a lie than to fact-check, even if a video or deepfake gets debunked, the damage has already been done. The viral, inflammatory content almost always gets more reach than the debunking, since social media is typically engineered to promote emotionally-provocative content in the name of engagement and ad revenue. I don't know what is going to cause the catastrophe, but it will almost certainly be started by waves and waves of rage bait that is not rooted in authentic, lived human experience.
