Who is the transgender Victoria’s Secret model Valentina Sampaio? Last night, the infamous Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show returned after a six year hiatus, with models @Alex Consani and Valentina Sampaio making history as the first transgender models to walk the runway. 27 year old Valentina Sampaio was born in a fishing village in Aquiraz, Ceará, which is in Northeastern Brazil. At 8 years old Valentina’s psychologist told her parents she was transgender, but she did not start calling herself Valentina until she was 12. In an interview with the NYT, she said that her parents “were always supportive and very proud” of her gender identity and that her classmates accepted her too “since they already saw me as a little girl”. In 2014, Valentina was fired from her first modeling job for being trans. The clothing company told her that the brand was conservative and its clients would not be receptive to a transgender model. Despite these setbacks, Valentina made history in 2017 by being the first transgender model to appear on the cover of Vogue Paris. Later that year she also appeared on the covers of Vogue Brasil and Vogue Germany. Valentina continued to make history in 2019, when she became the first transgender Victoria’s Secret model. The model wrote in an Instagram post: “Never stop dreaming”. The next year she also became the first transgender model to appear in Sports Illustrated. At last night’s Victoria’s Secret show in New York, Valentina wore a black satin lingerie set with a bejewelled fishnet midi skirt and a giant black and copper striped bow as her “wings”. Before the show she told People Magazine: “Today, the Victoria’s Secret family has shown the world that being trans is just as exceptional and beautiful as anyone else on that runway. Inclusivity is crucial to the world we’re building, and I’m honored to walk with pride, love and the hope of inspiring the next generation. Thank you, Victoria’s Secret, for making a long-held dream come true.” Fellow trans VS angel 21 year old Alex Consani wore a pale blue sequin lingerie set and matching blue wings. Consani started modelling at the age of 12 after answering a Facebook ad seeking transgender models and signed with IMG Models in 2019. At the time, she was considered the youngest transgender model in the world.
